The one thing I know for a fact is that my wife is the one who introduced this song to our family during the Pandemic. It got put on a playlist that we listened to all the time; out driving, taking a hike, having a picnic, dance party at home, whatever we were doing this song would pop up. I put it on a playlist, and the kid even added it to one of her first playlists she created. So when I hear it, not only does it get stuck in my head, but it reminds me of a very specific two year period of my life.

Earworm Wednesday: What the hell is a “Disco Round?”
I mean, I know it’s referring to a disco floor, but “disco round” is still a weird term.
Though the song came out in 1978, when I hear it, it makes me think of getting ready for elementray school in the early 80’s. My mom would play the “top 40” radio in the kitchen as she got all of us ready for school. And for whatever reason this song played one morning as I ate Frankenberry cereal, and became lodged in my memory.

Earworm Wednesday: Everyone Should Have Their Own Theme Song
I never gave Ben Folds Five anytime of day. I did have a girlfriend in college that loved the shit out of them, and being that she was dating me, I just assumed she had a thing for nerdy quirky guys.
Then, like six or seven years ago when I was on a puppet show tour, all of us puppeteers were at the hotel bar talking about music, and what do we consider to be our personal theme song? You know, that song that when you hear it, either speaks to you, or defines who you are. And one of the puppeteers, named Kate, said that “Kate” by Ben Folds Five, was her song. And icing on the cake was that the song sort’a did sound like it was describing puppeteer Kate. So, when I hear “Kate” it makes me think of Kate, and I miss Kate. She’s pretty cool.

Earworm Wednesday: My Kid Hates this Lumbering Song
I will give you bonus points if you remember “The Midnight Special” TV series.
It’s a kitschy song in my opinion, but the main riff is pretty cool, and does get stuck in my head easily. Also, that’s the reason my kid hates this song – her dad wanders around the house humming it, and it just drives her crazy.
But I know that I’m not the only one who loves that riff…

Earworm Wednesday: It’s from that Movie, Right?
“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” was suggested by my daughter, who associates this song with the end of Real Genius. It took me a couple of minutes to realize that this song does play at the end of that movie, you know, when all the kids are jumping in the popcorn that exploded out of that professor’s house. For some reason I thought this song played at the end of a John Huges movie, like The Breakfast Club. (I was thinking of “Don’t You (Forget About Me.” which I might use next week.)
Anyway, the kid hates how easy this song gets stuck in her head. My memory of it is listening to it on the radio when my Mom was driving me around in her Chevette in the late 80’s. We might have been on our way to the J.C. Penny’s at Six Flags Mall to buy me a pair senseable slacks.
