  • Post-Debate: This is bad…

This is bad folks. Really bad. Such as, I am very nervous that the United States might not survive this election.

It wasn’t just one moment of Trump’s shit show. And there were some really awful moments. The interrupting, the conspiracy theories, the environment forest management thing, the doubting of a fair election. Then Trump told his supporters that they should go to the polls and intimidate voters, and that the Proud Boys should stand by to be called into action. It is just horrifying that. I never thought that an American politician would behave like that, in public.

But taken as a whole, what I was left feeling is that Trump doesn’t care who he has to hurt, or what he has to destroy, to win. For Trump, it’s win or nothing. And even if he does win, I don’t think that will be enough. I think he will go after his political opponents, and try to put them in jail.

I joked after the Republican convention that I left feeling like I was a hunted creature for being liberal. After last night, I think Trump will call on his supporters and white supremacists to go and riot in the streets. That open conflict will follow on November 3rd.

Even if Trump comes to his senses, and agrees to a peaceful transfer, he has already put the thought out there, and you cannot take it back.

  • Trump v Biden: The Debate Battle Royale!

Maybe I should talk about Trump’s income taxes? That seems to be a big deal right now.

The debate between Biden and Trump is tonight. I will be watching it alone, as anything that comes out of Trump’s mouth makes my wife very angry, and pretty much puts her in a bad mood for the rest of the night…

    And into the morning…

    And all the next day…

    And for the whole week…

So, I will be watching the debate on my computer with headphones, while also live tweeting (@mlgroff) my reactions to whatever crazy shit that is said. My goal is to make my friends laugh, but it is also to keep my sanity.

I was extremely nervous four years ago when Clinton and Trump met for their debates. Hilary won all the face offs, as Trump come across as disrespectful and unprepared, but we all know that in the end, it didn’t really mean anything.

There is a good chance again, that these debates won’t mean anything. And honestly, I agree with that conclusion. Trump and Biden’s polling numbers really haven’t changed that much in two months, which for me says that most people are locked in on who they are voting for.

But honestly, who is that 3-5% of the voting population that are still undecided? With everything that has happened in this year alone, how has that not influenced you to make a decision?

I need to laugh, and I need to laugh and the big orange bully in the room.

  • Election Delay? No, Trump is Trying to Distract You

So, Trump wants to delay the election? I mean, that’s what he tweeted and, seems to me, that’s what everyone has been talking about for two days, right? But, he doesn’t have the authority to do that, and the Constitution won’t allow it, as there are specific dates which Congress and the President must be sworn in on. There is no way to change the election date.

Trump is up to his old tricks of trying to distract, and change the conversation.

If we are all talking about changing the election, then we aren’t talking about the huge drop in GDP. We aren’t talking about people about to lose their extra unemployment benefits. We aren’t talking about up to 30 million people facing eviction. We aren’t talking about Federal agents in the streets of Portland. We aren’t talking about BLM. We aren’t talking about Covid-19’s rising infection and death rates. And especially, we aren’t talking about John Lewis, a true American hero, who fought for justice, equality, and voting rights.

There is so much going wrong, that we need to be focus and working for solutions.

    Don’t fall for the distraction.

  • DNC Tries to Stop Bernie: Don’t Deny the People Their Choice

I never held much stock in the idea that centrist Democrats would actually band together and try to stop Bernie from getting the nomination, but after Pete, Beto, and Amy all showed up for Biden yesterday, I am beginning to think that a fix, though not in, might be in the works.

When I read Michelle Goldberg this morning, and her take is that Bernie cannot attract new voters to win against Trump, it really started to sink in how much Bernie scares the crap out of mainstream Democrats.

For this piece, I will do a thought exercise. This is not what I currently believe, but I want to do an experiment.

Let’s just say that all of the middle of the road Democrats all are right about Bernie; if Sanders gets the nomination, he loses to Trump. Well, how did that happen and what does that mean?

If the centrists continue down their path of trying to pack the vote against Bernie, and create a contested convention where Sanders loses the nomination, then the centrists have just handed Trump a victory. It plays into the narrative that “elitists” know better than the people, and that’s how democracy dies, they would say. Also, if the Democrats do this, then the majority of Bernie supporters won’t show up. (They did it in 2016, remember?) Finally, it sends the message to the people of this country that incremental to no change is better. Sadly, mainstream Democrats aren’t listening to the rest of this country who are actually hurting, which is why they are looking for a Bernie to shake things up. That was a big reason why people voted for Trump, and the mainstream Republicans tried to do the same thing to derail that nomination. They failed and we got Trump.

I don’t know for certain what the right answer is. Luckily, no one does, but denying voters their choice is not a solution. It will only make things worse.

  • When It’s All Said and Done

The second night of the debates are over, and now we all know that people will start to drop out soon.

I would hope that we get down to 10 Democratic candidates by October, but I still think that might be too optimistic.

And what does all of this mean?

I admit that I am an “Anyone Who Can Beat Trump” voter. I would even take another Republican.

I will also admit that I think Democrats have apologized for far too long that they are liberal and have grand ideas. Those days must come to an end.

In my lifetime, it has felt like my choices have been either the party that sticks up for the rich guy, or the party that is sorry if sticking up for the poor guy offends you.

On another note, there seemed to be some hub-bub from pundits about the candidates attacking each other, and how that will be detrimental later in the campaign against Trump. Two things on that. First, since when did Trump need facts or help attacking rival politicians? Like Trump is taking notes or thinking through his attacks for maximum impact. Second, I think most pundits are thinking about the 2020 election as if they were fighting in 2012. They are bringing the wrong tools to the gun fight, and most them are walking into it with wet spaghetti. Reagan’s 11th Commandment doesn’t exist anymore, and voters who pay attention to these debates have come to expect politicians to attack.

When this is all said and done, the majority of voters are really looking for a candidate who will validate their feels. Then they will worry about details.
