  • ODDS and ENDS: Vacation, Euro Final, and The End of the World

(And I knew there was no turning back…)

I had been out of town for the past week and a half. You could call it a vacation, in the sense that I left the place where I lived and went someplace new. I was Texas, but it was a new town in Texas that I had never been to before. It was Sanger, TX which is small town country Texas. It had been over twenty years since I had been in a region of Texas that was so far removed from everything else in the world. Though that far out in the country is not a place I would like to live (I am a City kid, after all) having grown up in Texas, there is something comforting and reassuring about being in that world of Texas. Not that I even spent a huge amount of time in the country, but if you dive an hour in any direction from the DFW area, you hit flat land, dusty winds, and a feeling that the world goes on forever. I enjoyed my time in Sanger. Yes it was small, but it was small town friendly, and a good place to have a wedding. (I was there for a wedding, if I didn’t say that yet.) It was also fun to show my daughter, who is a real City Kid, what the country is really like.

And as I was in Texas for a wedding, I wasn’t able to finish my Euro Cup observations. Well, though I was rooting for England, I never really thought they were going to win. Spain just looked dominating, and they seemed destined to win it all. Now, I will say that England put up a hell of a fight (at least that’s what the highlights I saw showed) and it was entertaining, but England will always be the bridesmaid of international football. England had better players, but Spain was the better team. I have a very odd feeling that this was Harry Kane’s last international tournament. With Southgate resigning, which was expected win or lose, I don’t see Kane wanting to stick around. Not that Harry wouldn’t make the squad, but something strikes me that Kane is ready to pass the torch, so to speak. Botton line, I thought the Euro Cup 2024 was exciting and fun and well worth paying the cable fees so I could watch all the matches.

I don’t like being this guy, but lately, it does feel like the world is coming to an end. Hopefully, it will pass after November, 5th.

  • Texas BBQ Smoked Turkey

Today, the smoked turkey we ordered for Thanksgiving arrived. It came from Greenburg Smoked Turkey, Inc on the recommendation of my sister-in-law. When we opened the box, it smelled like a Texas BBQ, which is exactly what we were hoping for. The bird is now sitting in our freezer awaiting the big day, while I’m waiting with great anticipation for the day AFTER Thanksgiving, so I can make stock from the turkey bones, and then we can make the best turkey stew.

The Texas I grew up with doesn’t exist anymore. It wasn’t all cowboys and guns, and MAGA conservatives; but it was about individualism and independence. And in a very weird way, for me, Texas bar-b-que is what can remind me of that. See, long ago, just about every small town had its own BBQ joint, that was no frills, and pretty damn amazing. There is a very specific mesquite wood smell to that BBQ which was unlike anywhere else. And when you smell it you know it’s Texas. And these little joints were all about that smoked mesquite. It’s best to think of Texas small town joint BBQ like pizza; even when it’s not good, it’s still pretty damn good.

Anyway, opening up the Greenburg box, boy, did it ever smell like Texas smoked mesquite BBQ! And it just reminded me of long road trips to Lubbock, or heading way out to El Paso. Make stops in Fredericksburg, and or the Turkey Shop in Abbot, TX. I guess I miss home more than I thought.

  • Baseball Reflection

Sometimes, I can make the mistake of not thinking things through; Such as last night when I stayed up late watching the ALCS. (And that would make two nights in a row that I have stayed up late, and not gone to bed. Yes, I am suffering for it today, thank you.) The reason was simple – The Rangers were playing the Astros, it was game seven of the American League Championship, and I also knew a great number of friends and family were watching the game. See, I grew up in Arlington, TX where the Rangers play, and there is an amount of hometown loyalty to the team. I’m not as rabid as some of my friends, but I thought it best to check it out.

It was a good game if you were a Rangers fan, as Texas pretty much blew out Houston – just stomped them as the final was 11 – 4. But being that I was partial to the Rangers, I had a good time following along. Truth be told, what sealed the Astro’s fate was Ted Cruz, and if there is one person who can ruin anything, it’s Ted Cruz…

The baseball team that I follow, and pretty much my family does as well, are the Chicago Cubs. My family is from the Chicago area, so its baked into our identity. Also, my maternal grandfather was a diehard Cubs fan, and when we’d visit him in the summers, he’s watch afternoon games called by Harry Carry and Steve Stone on WGN. 2016 was one of the greatest years of my life because that’s when the Cubs broke the curse and won the whole thing. Yes, I had tears of joy on that night, and thought about so many family members who had passed on never having seen the Cubs win it all, including my grandfather.

And to be honest, baseball has never felt the same to me after the Cubs won the World Series in ’16. I followed that team the whole year – Spring Training to game seven in Cleveland. I watched as many games as I could, followed the team on the MLB app, and even on their IG account. I was invested that year. I didn’t really believe they would win it, as I had my heart broken in ’84, and ’89, and ’98, and ’03 with “five more outs to go,” and ’04, and ’07 and ‘08… You get use to it after a while, you know. But I still had hope.

So, it was fun last night, watching a baseball game again, with something big on the line. There were flashbacks of the pain that believing in a team can cause you. There also was the excitement of watching a team go out there and have fun.

    Maybe I’ll watch the World Series… I don’t know…

  • Texas Music

Texas gets a bum wrap of late, and to be honest, it deserves it. I can say that because I lived there for over twenty years. I might not be a born Texan, but I’m Texan enough.

Anyway, sometimes a certain song or sound hits me, and it reminds me of that state. Usually, it’s a song from Willie or Stevie, but sometimes it can be ZZ Top.

I think it’s because it’s really hot in New York, and if it’s hot in July, that reminds me of Texas.
