  • Earworm Wednesday: Everyone Had This Album from ’95 to ’97

I speak of The Steve Miller Band’s Greatest Hits 1974-78. But more about that in a second.

I bring all of this up because “Rock’n Me” was played to me the other day, and it has been stuck in my head ever since. The earworm portion of the song is the whole song, but if I have to get more specific, the opening guitar riff wedges in my brain, along with the way Miller sings “Northern California.”

Now to get back to the Greatest Hits album. So, in my world, between 1994 and 1997, just about everyone I knew owned this album. Like, I would go over to someone’s place, and flip through their cd collection, and guaranteed, Steve Miller’s Greatest Hits would show up. I remember going to college parties my freshman and sophomore year in college, and someone would always put this on. The funny thing is that I don’t remember any Steve Miller resurgence happening in the mid 90’s. (Unless somebody out there remembers something I don’t…) More like, it was a classic rock album that everyone was cool with.

  • Earworm Wednesday: It’s Ringo’s Turn

Now, I will go to the mat and fight on any hill available to me when I say that Ringo is one of the truly great rock drummers of all time. C’mon, let’s go!

But this song does drill into my skull and won’t leave which is rather annoying.

And I guess it was time to pick on another Beatles and cut Paul some slack…

  • Earworm Wednesday: It Gets Ya at the Get-Go

It’s the first 11 seconds of the song.

But if I may defend for a second…

It was 1998, and a very good friend of mine let me borrow Wave of Mutilation: Best of Pixies. I knew nothing about Pixies, but as soon as I listened to that album, I pretty much played it non-stop for two months. (I will also admit that another good friend of mine tried to get me to listen to Surfer Rosa a year earlier, but it didn’t take so that doesn’t count.) The first good friend was very proud of themselves for converting me to be a Pixies fan, and my reward was him doing a spot on impression of these first 11 seconds of “Broken Face.” Not only does those 11 seconds get stuck in my head, but I can also see my friend’s face as he sung them to me – usually in his car as he drove us to a bar.

  • Earworm Wednesday: The Countdown was never Final

My kid has been humming this for three days.

    THREE DAYS!!!

And you know the part that she’s been humming.

    Totally stuck in my head…
