  • ODDs and ENDS: Other Guy’s Parking Problems, Tom Brady, and Tired

“ODDS and ENDS” is my continuing series of random thoughts and follow ups…

I know I bitch about parking in the City often, and maybe I complain too much, but today I watched another guy flip out over parking. I mean, yelling and screaming. He lost his original spot because he refused to get out of the way of the sweeper, and when he did get out of the way, someone took his spot. Now, the guy who lost his spot was able to get a new one, because people, myself included, packed our cars pretty tight making a space for him. I thought this was one of those Magical New Yok moments where people from all walks of life work together to help someone out. But no… The guy, in his new spot, still bitched and moaned and yelled at all of us… Go, New York!

I expected more from Tom Brady. I only got 21.98 points off him last night. Thanks a lot, GOAT.

And I’m tired. I think I have been saying this I was 16, and when I think about it, 16-year-old me really wasn’t tired, I just enjoyed naps. I don’t remember when the last time was when I didn’t feel tired. And I started thinking that it has gone on for so long that there is no way to catch up and not feel tired. Like, there is no amount of sleep, or meditation, or relaxation that will exorcize this feeling from me. And I thought I was tired before I had a kid.

  • ODDS and ENDS: Autumn Traditions, Fantasy Football, and Facebook Knew

“Odds and Ends” is my continuing series of random thoughts and follow ups…

It’s Autumn, and not fake “I Want It to Be Autumn So I Put on A Sweater But It’s 80 Degrees Outside” Autumn. It is in the 60’s and leaves are starting to change. Which means in our home, we’re going apple picking soon! This is the cheesiest tradition we have in our house. I mean, I do love it, but it is cheesy. We drive way the hell upstate to find some out of the way farm that isn’t too crowded, and go crazy picking and eating apples. The kid can only take about an hour of it, but for the first thirty minutes, we all behave as if we are some sort of apple expert, deciding how many of each variety we want. But I love it. And this year, I promise I won’t make the same old line about how we’re paying the farmer to his job. No more of that Dad Joke.

Just for the record, I have a pretty good team in my fantasy football league. Now, I admit that I had nothing to do with my teams’ selection, as I let the computer auto draft my players. But man! I’m like Stephen A. Smith around here! I do know everything!

Yup, Facebook knew. We all know this. Facebook knew what it was doing; how awful social media could be to democracy, and mental health, and all of it. But we all still use social media. Will the whistleblower who will talk on 60 Minutes on Sunday, and Congress on Tuesday, change people’s behavior? Sadly, I doubt it.

  • My Sporting Weekend

I’m not the biggest sports fan, but I do enjoy writing about it, and spending this time, when I’m trying to figure out what to blog about, to think about sports in my life.

This weekend wasn’t the best. Tottenham went down in flames against Arsenal. The North London derby was more like a stampede and massacre all rolled into one. And Arsenal isn’t a good team, but damn, they sure did make the Spurs look worse. It was one of those matches where the other team seemed to be everywhere on the pitch. I gave up at half time and cleaned the bathroom.

Then I thought I would look up where the Cubs were in the standing, and I knew they weren’t having a good season, but I saw that they were 26 games back. It was like the Cubs from the 80’s had returned from the grave. I was expecting to see Mark Grace and Andre Dawson out there on the field. Looking at the Cubs stats for the season just made me angry again at the Ricketts selling off the team a month or two ago. Looks like another 100 years of rebuilding.

And that now leaves me with Monday night football and the Cowboys playing against the Eagles. I have hope the Cowboys will win, as I despise the Eagles as a team, and Eagles fans as well. They are just not nice people. They threw snowballs at Santa Clause, you know. And the old Veterans Stadium used to have a jail and a courtroom in it to deal with the drunk rowdy fans. Anyway, I’m hoping that the Cowboys will win, and Elliot will have a good game. Like, “get me 15 points so my fantasy team can win this week,” good game.

Not that I’m a sports fan.

  • ODDS and ENDS: Fantasy Football, Chopped Cheese Biscuit, That’s Not a Holiday

“Odds and Ends” is my continuing series of random thoughts and follow ups…

This week, I received the email alerting me that the Fantasy Football League that I take part in is ready for the coming season. I have been taking part in this league for over ten years, and I’ve won it twice. Our group used to be twelve players, but now we are down to six; four of us went to college together, one guy is a friend I used to work with in New York, and the other guy is the husband of a college friend. I know that the six of us have never been in the same room together, but it does feel like the band is getting back together when fall rolls around.

Do you know what a chopped cheese sandwich is? It’s a New York bodega thing, but I feel like people outside of the City are starting to find out about it. I say all of this because there is a food market in Harlem, Manhattanville Market, that has a joint called Butterfunk Biscuit Co. that is now offering a Chopped Cheese Biscuit Sandwich. This monstrosity might take 35 minutes off my life, but it looks comfort food amazing! I might not need an excuse to stop by there this weekend.

Yesterday was “National Dog Day” or as my wife put it, “National Tell Me Your Dog’s Name So I can Try to Hack Your Password Day,” and while we’re at it, it’s also, “What’s Your Mother’s Maiden Name Day,” and “What Street Were You Born On Day” as well…

  • Football (Both) Amid Covid

This will be one of my rare sports blogs, but as we are closing in on the start of American Football, and the English Premier League, it just seems fitting.

Last week, my good friend contacted me and all of our circle of friends, asking if we wanted to continue out fantasy football league this season, and to be honest, I wasn’t even aware if there would be a football season this year. I’m sure I’m not alone in this; with everything that is going on, fantasy football hadn’t been high on my radar, but the thought of texting friends about how awful players are doing, and sinking their chances of winning our league did seem like a nice distraction. Don’t ruin it for me, but the fact that there are fantasy football leagues seems to me to say that there will be a season. But I don’t feel any excitement for it. Normally, I have a stupid optimism that my team, The Dallas Cowboys, will actually win it all. Facts don’t matter in this situation; I just somehow know that they will pull it off. I’m not feeling it this year. I don’t know anything that is going on with the team other than Dak will be starting.

As for the other team I am following, Tottenham Hotspur FC in the Premier League, they start their season on Sunday. I do feel like I am a little bit of a bubble when it comes to rooting for them, as I don’t know of any other Hotspur fans. It’s almost like my little sports secret. If I want to watch them this year, I will have to subscribe to Peacock, which will be $50 for the season. This is a little more exciting to me, for the simple fact that I have to put some skin in the game if I want to follow them, (Funny how spending money on something makes you care more) and I will be spending that money on them.

I can agree with the idea that with sports continuing, even in its limited capacity, it does give the sense of normalcy. That, we can have something “other” to talk about. But for right now, I will settle for my two teams to just have a winning record.
