  • World Cup Dispatch (Update): USA v England

    So, we are through the first half of the match, and it’s going as well as I could have expected. England did start out leading this match, and Harry Kane did have an early opportunity. But as the match has gone on, USA has started playing more confidently. They sure started working on England’s right side, and several times USA had some explosive runs down the pitch. That’s not to say that England was being out played. The last two minutes of the first half, Sterling had a solid chance for a goal, and even got a corner kick to end the half.

    Also, it has been a rather clean match. Sure, a little pushing and shoving, but no hard tackles. I expected USA to play a little cautious, as they did get several yellow cards against Wales. England… well… they always play rather polite.

    In the second half, I see the US playing the same, testing England’s backline, and keeping the pressure on. England, I see them playing harder, and working the ball forward to Kane, Saka and Sterling.

    Here we go!

    UPDATE: A draw against England is pretty damn good. USA gets to live another day, but now means that they have to beat Iran on Tuesday. Team USA looked good out there. They challenged England on the ball, and pushed hard, but just couldn’t get it across the line. England, on the other hand, didn’t look that great out there. Their defense was good, and they held the ball, but there wasn’t a whole lot of pressure in the American box.

    So… Tuesday is going to be a big day. Winners get to go to the Knockout Round.

  • World Cup Dispatch: England v Iran

    First of all, I don’t know if this will be a running series or not. I’m watching the World Cup, and we’ll see how often I write about it.

    Second, I would like to again pay homage to my friend Shawn, who in the Summer of 2002 took the time to make me a convert to the world of international football.

    Third, I am going to try to watch as many matches as possible, but I will put a preference on the teams that I normally follow; USA, England, Mexico, and South Korea. I may drop in on some others, but this will be my primary focus. If they all get knocked out of the tournament, then I might stop following… you know, like a true fan would.

    Right now, I have been watching the England v Iran match since the 30th minute. We are in stoppage time right now, and England is up 3-0. Iran doesn’t look terrible, it’s just that England looks like a well-oiled machine. I mean, they scored three goals in ten minutes, and Kane hasn’t taken a good crack at goal yet, so this could be a very long day for Iran. If I was the rest of the group, I would say everyone needs to find a way to gum up the Kane/Sterling duo of England, or this will just turn into a fight for second. Being that they have just gone in for halftime, I don’t see Iran coming back to earn a draw let alone a win. I know, really stepping out on a limb with this take.

    And so, my World Cup 2022 journey has started. Just like when it was in Russia last time, there is a feeling of hypocrisy blanketing this tournament. Not only because of the blatant bribery that took place for Qatar to get the Cup, but another authoritarian nation gets to put on a façade to the world that they are a modern, open, and free country. This will be an issue I will be wrestling with for the length of the tournament, and I am sure this won’t be the last time that I mention it.

    Let’s see how this play out.

    Oh, Second half started and Saka scored again. 4-0 England.

    Wait Iran, just scored! Holy crap! It’s 4-1, but at least Iran is still fighting.

  • ODDS and ENDS: World Cup Starts on Sunday, Twitter-ageddon, and Thanksgiving

    (I came all this way…)

    I shouldn’t watch the World Cup. FIFA, the organization that runs the World Cup, is corrupt as the day is long, and they were paid off by Qatar so that this authoritarian nation could host the competition. Just gander at this, if you haven’t heard it yet. That’s bad, but let’s not forget that Qatar has a history of human rights abuses, and in the rush to build these stadiums in the desert, thousands of migrant workers died. That is truly horrendous, and unconscionable. Then today, Qatar banned beer sales at the stadiums. Now, now, wine and alcohol will be available in the VIP boxes, but not for everyone else. Yes, fans will be able to get alcohol at their hotels, and other designated spots. I don’t know much, but I do know that when you ban something, people will just find a way around it. That leaves me to believe that there will be a whole lot of pre-gaming from certain fans from England and Germany. Well, actually, all the teams from Europe, if I am to be honest. The World Cup in Qatar is a shitshow before it even started. And yet the whole world will watch. Myself included. There is a little shame in that, sure, but I really like the idea of a global sports competition. It’s not the equalitarian event I want it to be, but I keep hoping that if all of us who love this event keep putting pressure on the organizers, that soon we can have the fair, sportsmanship advocating event that we all really want. Also, Mexico will choke in the group stage, USA will make it to the knockout round but lose their first match, and England takes third place. That’s my prediction, as I have no idea who will win the whole thing.

    I keep expecting Twitter to blowup – just explode in a ball of flames. Sadly, I see now that it will be a slow decline, like Myspace and Tumblr. Everyone will migrate somewhere else, and the trolling begins anew. I just can’t make heads or tails of Mastodon. (Seriously, I need to pick a sever? Whatever.) I think my Tumblr account is still active. Just look for me @mlgroff wherever handles are used.

    I’m ready for Thanksgiving. We’ll be shopping for the meal this weekend, as we have had our menu ready to go for two weeks now. I’m looking forward to this holiday because in our house, we hang around in pajamas all day, and eat when the meal is ready. It is a very lazy day in our house. As I have gotten older, and now that I am a father, Thanksgiving has come to symbolize for me the last full day of rest I can get before the crazy marathon of Christmas starts. So, Here! Here! Turkey Day!

  • ODDS and ENDS: World Cup, Lawsuits, and Reading

    (I Believe That We Will Win!)

    So, the World Cup is almost here, and yes, I am excited about it. I have kept my promise of not blogging non-stop about Tottenham, (even though they have been playing like gash, yet still did make it out of the group stage in the Champions League – but that is a blog for another day) and as the World Cup is about to begin, I will be writing about it. The teams I will be watching are Team USA because you support your home country, Mexico as they have good teams that never deliver and their fans are the best, and England. In fact, The English National Team released a video announcing their team lineup that I thought was rather original:

    Now, I woke up this morning to the news that a Texas Federal has ruled the Biden-Harris Student Loan Forgiveness plan unconstitutional. The lawsuit was filed by a group called Job Creators Network Foundation, which is an organization that was founded by the billionaire and former CEO of Home Depot, Bernard Marcus. What I find the most interesting about Marcus, and this whole situation, is that if you read his bio, after graduating high school, he wanted to be a doctor, but couldn’t afford college, so he went to a state school – Rutgers – back when college was funded by the government, making it affordable for working class kids from Newark in 1947. Added on top of that, I can find no evidence of Marcus fighting against the Federal Government cutting his taxes back in 2017. I mean, Marcus owed taxes, but then Trump passed a law and forgave what he owed, in essence. I love how hypocritical the uber-wealthy are. And they wonder why no one likes them.

    Did you know the average American reads 13 books a year? I was actually surprised by that number, as I thought it would be much lower. I have a feeling there are a few people out there that are reading way more than 13 books a year, which is pushing the number up, and I would like to thank those people for helping make America seem more literate.

  • ODDS and ENDS: FIFA Men’s World Cup, Easter, and Soup

    (Things I think…)

    The Men’s World Cup teams are pretty much locked in now. I know there are three play-off matches left to go, but, on the whole, the World Cup is set. I am glad that Team USA was able to make it in this time around. All they had to do was not lose to Costa Rica by more than six goals, so Team USA lost by two goals. It would have been nice to qualify with a win, but I’ll take what I can get. Also, it’s kind’a cool that all of North America will be represented; Canada, USA and Mexico will all be there. Which is a little bit funny as that Continental Trifecta will be hosting the 2026 Cup, and means they all get automatic bids as the host nations. I will be rooting for Team USA, but will also follow England. And I will keep my eye on Senegal; I got a good feeling about them. The only downside to all of this is that the tournament doesn’t kick off until November. I got eight months to sit on this, and do a grand amount of speculating.

    When my daughter got up this morning, she asked me, how soon till Easter? It’s almost here, and we, the wife and I that is, haven’t hand a single thought about it. We did talk, at the start of the year of getting out of town for that weekend, but I don’t think that’s likely. The kid, on the other hand, is ready for bunnies, and eggs, and going to see farm animals, and flowers, and candy. Lots and lots of candy. In my kid’s mind, I think she believes the year is divided up into periods where she receives candy.

    I like soup now.
