  • Earworm Thursday: Middle School Love Feelings

I don’t care what anyone says; I love The Cure.

I know this song came out in 1987, but somehow it didn’t register with me until 7th grade, which was ’89. I don’t remember why that was, but my guess is that 1989 was when the Disintegration album was released, with “Lovesong” being a huge single, and all of The Cure’s videos were in heavy rotation on 120 Minutes, which was why I discovered all these songs at the same time.

The Cure has a very special place in my psyche, because 12-15 year old me identified heavily with this music as it tapped into a tragic romantic feeling of unrequited love that puberty afflicted me couldn’t get enough of… for some reason. Looking back on this music, I see now that I was beginning to make my first entrants toward alt-rock, which would pay dividends in 1991, and set me on a trajectory of music that I still follow to this day.

And “High” is just one of my favorite songs of all time.

  • Earmworm Thursday: Karma Chameleon

I was like six when this song came out, so I have a few vague memories about it. First was that my brothers watching the video on MTV, as we had just got cable. Second was my mishearing of the lyrics, as I thought Boy George was singing “Comin’ a Comedian.” And third was my very straight lace, and very Catholic mother trying to figure out if Boy George was a boy, and if he was, why was he dressing that way?

    I still love this song.

  • Earworm Thursday

I haven’t been able to get this song out of my head. The wife had it on a playlist that I listened to this weekend, which was cool. It reminded me that I saw Beck live on the Midnite Vultures tour.

  • Earworms

(I’m talking about music earworms. This is your warning. What follows may get stuck in your head.)

When you say “earworm” to my wife, she immediately thinks of the ear bugs from Star Trek 2. The one that Khan put in Chekhov’s ear. Which is awful and gross, and not what I am talking about.

NO, I am talking about the earworm of a song that gets stuck in your head, and for the past two days, I have had “The Real Slim Shady” playing, ahh, pretty much non-stop. Now, what I am hearing isn’t the album track. No, I keep hearing this:

Which is kind’a weird, right? A piano version of the song, no lyrics or anything else; just piano.

Then, from time to time, I’ll get John Tesh’s NBA theme bouncing around.

Sometimes when I’m walking around the City, this will play in my head:

    Does anyone remember “Riptide?”

I guess I’m just talking about tv theme songs now. I always liked “Taxi.”

Back to the point… “Summer Breeze.”
