  • Earworm Wednesday: Everyone Should Have Their Own Theme Song

I never gave Ben Folds Five anytime of day. I did have a girlfriend in college that loved the shit out of them, and being that she was dating me, I just assumed she had a thing for nerdy quirky guys.

Then, like six or seven years ago when I was on a puppet show tour, all of us puppeteers were at the hotel bar talking about music, and what do we consider to be our personal theme song? You know, that song that when you hear it, either speaks to you, or defines who you are. And one of the puppeteers, named Kate, said that “Kate” by Ben Folds Five, was her song. And icing on the cake was that the song sort’a did sound like it was describing puppeteer Kate. So, when I hear “Kate” it makes me think of Kate, and I miss Kate. She’s pretty cool.

  • Magic of a Pool

I don’t know if you heard but the public pools are open in New York City! My kid is over the moon at this development.

For my kid, when it comes to ranking the best Summer Events; First is always the last day of school, and second is when the pools open!

And I get it, pools are great, especially when you are a kid. Pools are magical! They are indulgent, and refreshing, and an aquatic playground! When you were a kid, and you had to stay at a hotel, weren’t you more excited to do it if it had a pool? Of course, you were! Pools, even crappy motel pools, are the best thing on a vacation. Again, for a kid.

I remember when I was a kid, and asking a friend that when he’s gone on vacation, would be okay if I hopped the fence and swam in their pool while they were away. As an eleven-year-old boy living in stupidly hot Texas, this seemed like a reasonable request. My friend ratted me out to his patents and I had to promise that I would swim in their pool while they were away. AND his parents made me tell my parents to ensure I wouldn’t do it. (Now that I am a parent, I can see why they were concerned about a strange kid swimming in their pool while they were away, but at the same time – C’mon man!) For the record, I didn’t swim at their place while they were gone.

    Swimming Pool!

    A magical words.

Sounds like freedom, and endless days of adventure and excitement.

  • Rainy Day New York Thoughts

    Rainy Day New York Thoughts

I got up at 5:30 this morning, which is normal for a school day, and it was raining. It was the kind of raining that isn’t hard, but steady, and it whispers quietly, yet firmly, that I should go back to bed. I didn’t, but oh lord, did I get close to closing my eyes on the couch as the coffee brewed. The wife didn’t want to get out of bed, and neither did the dog. When I went to wake the kid, it only took her a second to register the sound, and quickly ask if she could also stay in bed.

We all fought through it. We ate breakfast and dressed, and collected backpacks and a lunch bag. We walked to the subway in rain. We rode to our stop and walked to school in the rain. I ran errands, and did laundry at the local laundromat in the rain. The rain has made my clothes from this morning damp.

It’s not that cold of a day, but the building’s steam heat is on, and to cool the apartment, we have to crack the windows. That has let the sound of the rain in, as well as a little more dampness. The influence of the rain, the mood of the rain, has creeped into our home, and is begging me to take a nap. Maybe read a book? Then take a nap? I should take a nap…

As of now, it’s still raining, but it should taper off by the time I have to go get the kid. Walking around the neighborhood of her school, I’ll pass the brownstones with their wet stoops. It will stay cool out, like an early Spring day should, and the feeling of being a little lazy will hang off of everything.
