  • The Power of Patrick Swayze (Unedited)

So, I was all gearing and ready to go, to sit down and knock out a blog for today. My wife had left the tv on as she was finishing her lunch, and being that I was planning on working on the couch, I needed to shut the tv off to concentrate. But what was on tv was the final fifteen minutes of Red Dawn. The real Red Dawn. The 1984 John Milius directed Red Dawn that started among many, Patrick Swayze. It had been a couple of years since I had seen it, and the ending is pretty good, with the brothers on the bench Ikiru style.

And then Road House came on, (I guess it was a Patrick Swayze marathon) and I totally got sucked into that movie. Make no mistake, and I have written about both Road House movies before, the original Road House is a bad movie. But man! It sure is a fun bad movie.

BUT… I had work to do, so I thought it best to talk about the Power of Patrick Swayze.

Actually, I wanted to talk about bad movies, and how I find myself needing them more than ever.

And I love movies. I love seeing them in a theatre. I love watching them late at night. I love reading about movies, and how they were made. And I agree with the notion that good movies, even gut wrenching, tragic, everyone dies dramas, will always leave you feeling better than when you started.

But right now, with the way the world is, a bad movie that just wants to be entertaining, and that is what Road House is, feels correct for these times. Bad yet entertaining movies know they’re bad, and not good for you. But I know that eating ice cream and cookies for dinner is bad for me, but some nights, it’s what I need to make it to the morning, and try all over again.

  • Barbarian Movies – Bad Movie Bible

If I had a spirit animal, it would be Rob Hill.

In case you missed it, I’m a huge fan of bad movies, and also a particular adamant fan of Rob Hill and his Bad Movie Bible YouTube channel. The above Barbarian video is the latest entry in Hill’s “Borrowing Blockbusters” series, which examines a movie that had an enormous, if not game changing, affect on the genre, and the inevitable rip-off movies that followed. I found it surprising that I had seen many of these rip-off Barbarian movies, especially all the films that came from Italy.

  • So Bad, It’s Good

You have to see this to believe it. Thank you again, Rob Hill, for excellent work in putting this together.
  • Ninja! Ninja! Ninja!

I love the work that Rob hill does putting these videos together. Rob does and excellent job putting these videos together which document the histories and behind the scene stories of these movies. As a guy who loves bad and B-movies, Rob is endless entertaining, and hilarious.

  • I Can’t Say No to a Bad Movie

Yesterday was a trying night in our apartment. The kid had issues sleeping, but even before that, I think we all ate too much sugar and were hyper beyond our expectations. I’m not kidding when I say this, as we made homemade cinnamon rolls with real icing in the morning, and that sugar rush made us jittery all day.

I have been trying to make an effort, really trying, to get to bed at decent hour, and earn a good night’s sleep. It doesn’t always work, as my success rate for getting to bed in time for seven hours of sleep is like 5% on a given night. What is keeping me up is my desire to discover the worst movie I can find? Amazon Prime is a goldmine of schlock, but not a limitless resource; I fear I might be approaching the bottom of this well rather soon.

And I should have gone to bed, I admit that, but this wouldn’t be a story if I did, right?

I thought the best thing I could do last night, right before I went to bed was to check and see if Rob Hill had posted anything new on his Bad Movie Bible YouTube page

What I found was, “A Top 10 Best Worst Heavy Metal Horror Movies,” a subject matter very close to my heart.

I have a particular fondness for this specific sub-genre of horror movies, as one of my favorite awful heavy metal horror movies is Rocktober Blood. (It used to be up on YouTube, but seems to have gone missing now. SHUDDER claims to have it, but you need to subscribe to be able to watch it.) There are a couple of songs in the movie that aren’t good, but are entertaining, especially “Killer on the Loose.”

Though Rocktober Blood didn’t make Hill’s list, it does get a mention in the video, which I take as a sort of victory for the film. A film that has brought me many hours of entertainment.

In the end, I stayed up too late again.
