  • ODDS and ENDS: Couch or Sofa, Tottenham Fans, and “Hundreds of Beavers”

(‘Cuz you woke up in the mornin’ with initiative to move…)

Do you use the term couch or sofa? Do you use them interchangeable? In fact, a couch is an informal – less structured piece of furniture, while a sofa is more formal in function and design. I say all of this because I am going couch/sofa shopping this weekend. Yeah, our livingroom couch is on its last leg being that it’s kind’a broken just enough to let us know it needs to be replaced, but not broken so much as to be unusable. The wife and I are about the spend a morning, and possible an afternoon, asking ourselves the “Fight Club” question; “What kind of couch defines me as a person?” I’m going with gray, or a navy blue; That defines me quite well as a person.

I have written before about my odd interactions with other Tottenham fans in New York. Most of the time, I see someone with Tottenham gear on, and I’ll say something to them about the team, or say “Come on you, Spurs!” They react by saying, “What?” or “This isn’t mine, I’m borrowing it.” But the other day, as I had my Tottenham scarf on, a woman yelled at me, “How about that Liverpool match!?!” She was talking about the Carabao Cup match on Wednesday where the most confusing team in all of football, Tottenham Hotspur, managed to beat one of the best teams in the world – Liverpool. But… I wasn’t able to watch the match or see the highlights, yet I knew that they had won… All I could say to the woman was, “I didn’t watch it, but I know they won!” Not the stirring response she was looking for, I know.

And I want to end with a movie I just watched, and I might review later. It is one of the most original comedies I have seen in a very a very long time. It’s called “Hundreds of Beavers.” Just… just watch the trailer, is all I ask.

  • It’s Beginning to Feel A Lot Like Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love the whole thing. From big family gatherings, to small family gatherings, to couples Thanksgiving, to friends-Thanksgiving, and any other combination you can throw together. Thanksgiving, with roots that go back to the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag, revived by Lincoln during the Civil War, and in our modern-day form of “That Day We Eat Before We Get Up Early to Shop,” this is a holiday that will continuously evolves to fit our needs.

For me, it is the food holiday with a huge helping of all-day relaxing. In my little family, we buy new pajamas and spend all of Thanksgiving in them. We eat homemade cinnamon rolls, watch the parade, cook, snack, drink, and eat when the food is ready. There is no set time, we eat when we eat. Some years it’s early, sometimes late, but whatever the year, it is always relaxed and is what it is.

This year, we have already bought our pajamas. The menu is planned, and we just have yet to do the final shopping. The decorations are out, and in place. The kid has a real job this year; she is putting together the charcutier board, and she is very excited. And, I am more excited about watching the Lions than the Cowboys. So, how’s that for a change.

But, as I get older, it becomes more apparent that the Thanksgiving holiday is a limited resource in my life. I never doubt that each year I will have something, if not a great many things, to be thankful for. It’s just that I know that it will, eventually, change. Now, change isn’t always bad. Every year we have the chance to add to our family and friends, and welcome new people to our table. I try to be thankful, each year, that I have the people that I have in my life.

  • ODDS and ENDS: God Bless The Onion, Sports, Wildfires, and Christmas Gifts

(Would it be too much to ask of you…)

It has been a pretty dismal news cycle for like the past two weeks. And then God smiled on all of us! The Onion bought the InfoWars website. Sweet Lord in Heaven, please let this happen! There are so many reasons it should. Sadly, the judge put the sale on hold to review if the correct process was followed. So you know, the CEO of The Onion put out a statement on why they bought the InfoWars site. On one level, it’s just good to stick it to Alex Jones, as he has brought so much hate and anguish into this world for no reason other to make money. And also, if the sale goes through, I find it wonderful poetic justice that this site of so much evil will end up being a place of laughter.

Honestly, Tottenham is driving me up the wall with all in the inconsistent play. They go and beat Man City, then turn around and drop one to Ipswich. Is this because Madison and van de Ven are hurt? Are those two guys the lynchpin of the team. I know the International Break is underway, and couldn’t have come at a better time. Let’s figure out what the problem is. It’s not like I was expecting Spurs to win the League, but it was reasonable to believe that they would qualify for the Champions League. Now, I’m not so sure.

There are wildfires in New York City. Not around the City, as we do have that as well, but actually in the City. Anywhere there is a park, there is a chance that it could go up in flames. Last night, Inwood Park had a fire, and this morning, when I walked out the door, it smelled like a camp fire. It’s an experience that I would have never thought I would have here. Upstate, or in New England, sure I could believe it. But NYC?

If you are looking for a fun Christmas Gift, may I suggest some Merch from My Store. These are fun, nostalgic, and quirky gifts that everyone on your list will love. Also, all proceeds go to me.

  • ODDS and ENDS: DMV Time, Tottenham Confusion, Merch Store, and Vote

    (I feel so bad, I got a worried mind…)

My driver’s license is going to expire soon. This means that I need to make my quadrennial appointment with the New York State DMV. Unlike most people, I don’t mind wasting time at the there. Normally, I get some good reading in, or have a fun time people watching. In New York, they let you schedule appointments. It implies that you will be seen at a certain time, but really, these appointments are just guidelines; a mere suggestion of when service will be rendered. Hence why I bring a book. And it’s easy to dump on the people who work at the DMV. What I have found is that if you are pleasant and show up with the correct paperwork filled out, the DMV staff not only is surprised that they don’t have to explain the process to you, their actually relieved.

So, let me get this straight… Tottenham can beat Man City, but they can’t beat Crystal Palace? Right…

The Merch Store is open people. All items share my philosophy of the type of blogger that I am.

You should vote, if you haven’t already. Make a plan. Tuesday is the final day, you know.

  • ODDS and ENDS: Candy, Tottenham Stuff, and Merch Store

(So sue me if I go too fast…)

The dirty secret of Halloween is that parents eat their kids candy when they aren’t looking. Any parent who denies this happens is a liar. We all do it. When we parents get together while taking the kids out Trick or Treating, it’s what we talk about; “What candy did they get? How much did they get? It’s just not healthy to let kids eat that much candy. We’re doing them a service.” The wife and I do buy a mixed bag of candy that we hide in the apartment and snack off of… but eventually, late one night, possibly after a few drinks, we reach into the kid’s bucket and see that she has three Skittles pouches, so she won’t miss one. And it’s awful when we do it, and we feel so guilty, but forbidden candy goes so well with watching Great British Baking Show.

Seems like Tottenham is the only team I have left to support for the foreseeable future. Cowboys have crapped out, and I could care less about the World Series. Sure, I guess I could again try my hand at following the Knicks, they look like they should have a good season. No, it’s Tottenham Hotspur or bust! They are playing really well in the Europa League, and are sitting at 2nd in that tournament’s table. It just them in the Premier League that is pulling me down. Those three losses are like an albatross, and it also seems like they give up a goal right away at the start of each match… But… it’s still early.

Oh, the Merch Store is open. Go get all your 1999 Blogging Gear are great low prices. Remember, each item sold goes to a good cause which is helping me buy a new MacBook Air, or sending my kid to college. All depends on how much we raise.
